What Are People Trading In for a 2015 F-150?

Wednesday, March 25th 2015. | 2015 Ford F-150, Reviews

I found a thread over at f150forum.com asking what people are trading in for their brand new 2015 Ford F-150. I thought it’d be interesting to look at this and to see if there are many conquest sales (someone moving from a non-Ford to a Ford vehicle). The 2015 Ford F-150 offers some very unique options that could very much attract people from other brands or segments. The use of incredible capabilities of the new F-150 should be able to attract plenty of GM, Ram, Toyota or Nissan truck buyers, the 2015 F-150 offers best-in-class towing as well as payload capacity.

But what’s even more interesting are possible conquests from people that would typically buy in a completely different segment. The 2.7 liter EcoBoost provides both power and efficiency that matches many of todays crossovers and SUV’s, the addition of a truck bed could be very attractive to these folks. We’ve found that the 2.7 liter Equipped 2015 F-150 is great for someone that intends to daily drive their vehicle, while still needing the capabilities of a truck from time to time.

I could also see these trucks attracting the tuner-crowd, the EcoBoost twins offer tons of possibilities to be modded, much like you’d mod a turbo-charged import. An EcoBoost SuperCab or SuperCrew could be very attractive to someone that’s forced to give up their smaller turbocharged import, they’d have room for their family, room for Home Depot runs and they’d still be able to get into tuning their vehicle in ways that they are familiar with. Just check out these 3.5 EcoBoost tuning results and these 2.7 EcoBoost tuning results.

But let’s get back to that thread I mentioned earlier, here is a list of the vehicles people are getting out of:

  • 1999 F-150 XLT 4×4 SuperCab with 4.6 V8
  • 1995 Toyota 4Runner
  • 2000 F-150 XLT SuperCab with 5.4 V8
  • 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 rSpec
  • 2007 Dodge Durango 4×4
  • 2014 Ford Explorer Sport with 3.5 EcoBoost
  • 2010 Jeep Patriot
  • 2013 F-150 Lariat with 3.5 EcoBoost
  • 2011 F-350 Diesel
  • 2009 Ford Escape Limited 4×4
  • 2009 F-150 Lariat SuperCrew with 5.4 V8
  • 1998 Chevy Silverado 1500
  • 2012 F-150 Platinum with 3.5 EcoBoost
  • 2012 Ford Mustang GT500
  • 2013 F-150 SuperCrew with 3.5 EcoBoost
  • 2008 F-150 FX2 SuperCab with 4.6 V8
  • 2010 F-150 Lariat
  • 2008 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab Texas Edition
  • 2010 F-150 XLT SuperCrew with 5.4 V8
  • 2009 Tacoma Double Cab TRD Sport 4×4
  • 2012 BMW 535i
  • 2014 Lexus GX460
  • 2012 F-150 Lariat SuperCab
  • 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse
  • 2010 GMC Yukon XL
  • 2012 F-150 FX4 SuperCrew with 3.5 EcoBoost
  • 2005 Chevy Silverado LT Crew Cab
  • 2011 GMC 2500HD Crew Cab

There’s just the first 3 pages worth. I’m seeing a lot of F-150 loyalty here, which is great to see, but there are also a fair amount of conquest sales from Chevy, GMC and Toyota trucks. Additionally we may be on to something with that tuner crowd! I see a Genesis Coupe and a Mitsubishi Eclipse in there. We are also seeing conquest sales from luxury sedans, a 535i and a GX460. A couple of people owning small SUV’s/crossovers decided they needed more utility so they upgraded their Patriot and Escape. I think in general this is the reasoning behind any conquest sale that involves someone coming from something other than a pickup truck. The more interesting aspect of this is the reasoning for picking an F-150, I think it’s the attraction of the engine options, the lightweight aluminum body and the array of gadgets available on a 2015 F-150. Ford has done a great job making these F-150’s attractive to people that currently don’t own trucks, that and lower gas prices probably help too.
