Ford’s Kansas City assembly plant will be building just one trim level of the 2015 Ford F-150. The recently redesigned plant employs 900 workers and is outfitted with 500 robots. Surprisingly the one trim level they are producing is not one of the top trim levels that are popular for F-150 buyers in the private sector. It’s the base model work-truck trim, specifically the Supercab model with 8ft bed and payload package. It’s what commercial fleet buyers are after.

As we reported last week Ford is currently holding back on fleet sales, when this plant get’s running at full capacity that won’t be necessary and I think for private buyers we’ll also be saying incentives go up. I’m expecting a big sales gain in the second half of 2015. It’ll be nice to see more and more of these trucks on the road, both in a work-truck trim and in the popular high-end trims.

correction 3/18/2015: There was a slight miss understanding here. The Kansas City assembly plant will be producing several trim levels as well as the Dearborn plant, but it’s unique in the sense that Dearborn does not produce the 8ft bed version with payload package, which Kansas City assembly now does. This is likely another reason Ford has dialed back its fleet sales.
