How To Calculate MPG

Thursday, March 12th 2015. | 2015 Ford F-150, Ford F-150, Reviews

A lot of our recent (2015) F-150 articles, both news and reviews, have focused on or touched on MPG’s, or miles per gallon. How are they calculated? On new trucks some of you may just go by what’s on your info display. But I’m here to tell you that those typically aren’t very accurate. The one on my vehicle can be off by as much as 2 miles per gallon. That’s a big deal, with today’s gas prices even 1 mile per gallon can make a big difference over the length of a tank. If you are dealing with a 2 mpg margin of error, you’ll have no idea if the driving habits you adjusted made any difference.

To accurately calculate miles per gallon do this:

Fill your tank until the pump hits the automatic shutoff and do not top it off. Before you drive off, reset your trip meter. Now on your next visit to the gas station refill the tank to the automatic shutoff, ideally at the same pump. Now take your miles divided by the amount of gallons to fill up your tank and the answer is your MPG number, or to write it more mathematically:
Miles since last fill-up / gallons to fill tank = miles per gallon

In this day an age there are of course apps that can do this for you, fuelly is my favorite one. You can update it from your phone, or write the miles on your gas receipt and fill it out when you get home and get a chance to get online to do it. Apps like fuelly can also be invaluable if you need to track mileage for work-purposes.
