In a previous product spot light we featured an LED replacement kit for dome lights, cargo lights, reverse lights, etc. Today we’ll look at bulbs again, both regular fog light bulbs and LED fog light bulbs, that you can buy to replace the fog lights on your 1999 through 2014 F-150. You read that right, we are looking at 15 years worth of F-150 trucks and their bulbs. That’s because Ford, throughout those years, used some variation of the H10 bulb. Early on the 9145 (45 watts) was used, and later, starting in 2004 the 9140 (40 watts) was used. Interestingly the bulbs used from 1999 through 2003 (9145) actually have a slightly higher light output.

You can certainly upgrade your 9140‘s to a 9145, you’d already notice an improvement, do not, however go for the 9155 (55 watts) because these have too high of a heat output for the plastic housing. There are two exceptions to this rule, 2004 and 2005 F-150’s with rectangular fog light housings or the STX series of F-150 since these have a metal housing (to word it another way; any truck with a glass or metal housing). You can install 9155‘s for 55 watts or even 9005‘s or 9011‘s for 65 watts of output, with the 9011’s putting out the most light. To install the 9005’s or 9011’s you have to be willing to somewhat modify the mounting tabs on the bulbs, which is not too hard to do with basic tools, I’ve done it for a previous car of mine.

For those of you with a plastic housing, or those of you just wanting a cool piece of tech, you can get an LED fog light bulb, this one for example, it is a drop-in/plug-and-play replacement for your current bulb. LED’s have several advantages over traditional bulbs.

  • They run a lot cooler (because they use a lot less power), so they’ll work in any housing.
  • They tend to have a long life, the one in our example has a life of 50,000 hours. That’s liable to last you the rest of the life of your truck, so while the initial cost may be a bit higher, you’ll likely never need to replace them.
  • LED bulbs tend to put out a much whiter light, the whiter a the output of a light bulb is, the more usable that light is, in other words, if you take two bulbs that are rated for the same light output, but one has a whiter light, it will actually appear as if it were a much brighter bulb.
  • Another advantage of this whiter light is that they’ll match up very nicely with your HID headlights, should you have those on your truck.
    • Many people in the comments section for this bulb, pointed out that it works nicely as far as matching the color of light their HID’s put out.

So to recap, for easiest hassle-free, straight-forward replacement, select the 9145 bulb above, you’ll definitely notice an improvement if you have the stock 2004-2014 9140 bulb, you’ll likely notice an improvement as well if you have the 1999-2003 9145 bulb, just because this is an upgraded, aftermarket replacement. If you are willing to spend a bit more you can go for the LED bulb listed above, be sure to read through the advantages of doing so. They can be had cheaper than the one listed above (click here, or check out the bulb featured below), with any product be sure to read through the comments!

Finally in some cases, if you have a metal or glass housing you can use bulbs that run hotter than the stock 9140’s or 9145’s. A 9005 or 9011 bulb, be sure to read the details above.
