F-150 EcoBoost 2.7 vs EcoDiesel Range

Thursday, March 5th 2015. | 2015 Ford F-150, Reviews

The 2015 Ford F-150 EcoBoost, equipped with 2.7 liter EcoBoost V6 can be had with an optional 36 gallon fuel tank, the 2015 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel can only be had with a 26 gallon fuel tank. So this makes for an interesting comparison range-wise. We did an article yesterday about the cost of owning a 2.7 EcoBoost vs a 3.0 EcoDiesel and ended up finding in favor of the EcoBoost, financially it was a pretty close call, but performance wise the EcoBoost had the EcoDiesel easily beat. In that article we used real-world mpg numbers of 19 mpg combined for the EcoBoost and 23 mpg combined for the EcoDiesel, we’ll use them for the purposes of this article as well, that translates to ranges of:

2015 Ford F-150 w/ 2.7 Liter EcoBoost V6 and optional 36 gallon fuel tank: 36*19 = 684 miles
2015 Ram 1500 3.0 Liter EcoDiesel V6 with 26 gallon fuel tank: 26*23 = 598 miles

Either truck has a very impressive range, which would be a great selling point for those that drive long distances, or those that just want to spend as little time as possible in gas stations (like me). With that fuel tank option ticked on the 2015 F-150 you get 86 miles of additional range over the 2015 EcoDiesel. How does that compare cost wise? Using the same gas prices we used yesterday of $2.45 for gasoline and $2.85 for diesel we end up with:

2015 Ford F-150: 36*2.45 = $88.20
2015 Ram 1500: 26*2.85 = $74.10

Nothing really to conclude from these numbers, aside from the fact that these numbers are fairly close despite the 10 gallon difference in tank size. And it’s always¬†interesting to see what it would cost you to fill the tank on either of these trucks.
