A History of Diesels in Ford Heavy Duty Trucks

Ford’s F series trucks have always featured quite a capable range of engines. The engines have certainly improved over the years, none more so than the choice of diesel engines that Ford has offered its truck buyers over the years. Here is a list of the diesel engines that the F series trucks have received and a small description of each one of them:

6.9 Liter IDI V8

This indirect injection V8 was brought to life in 1983 and it produced 170 horsepower and 315 foot pounds of torque, an output that was quite impressive back in ‘83. The engine was durable and was kept in production till 1987. It remained in high demand throughout its existence.

7.3 Liter IDI V8

This engine replaced the 6.9 liter V8 in 1987. Yet another indirect injection engine, the 7.3 Liter V8 had a bit more horsepower, 5 more to be exact, and even more torque than the engine it replaced, 30 foot pounds more in fact. This engine remained in demand as well till it was replaced in 1994.

7.3 liter Power Stroke V8

A far better engine than the one it replaced, the Power StrokeV8, the 7.3 Liter Power Stroke V8 is considered to be one of the best ever diesel engine offerings by Ford. The engine produced 275 horsepower and 575 foot pounds of torque thanks to direct injection and a turbocharger. Millions of these engines were sold till the end of their production in 2003, by which time this Power Stroke V8 had made its competitors work extra hard to keep up.

6.0 Liter Power Stroke V8

The 6.0 liter Power Stroke engine replaced the 7.3 Liter due to stricter emission requirements that were imposed by the government. This engine, however, was more powerful than the one it replaced thanks to improved technology and a variable geometry turbocharger. The engine produced 325 horsepower and 570 foot pounds of torque. Early versions of these engines had some technical issues, however the engine was improved and corrected with the passage of time.

6.4 Liter Power Stroke V8

This engine was created to keep up with even stricter emissions regulations imposed on car manufacturers. Equipped with better technology, the 6.4 Liter Power Stroke V8 really was cleaner and more efficient than its predecessor. The engine was stronger as well with 350 horsepower and 675 foot pounds of torque thanks a twin turbocharger setup, something that was unheard of among American truck manufacturers at that time.

6.7 Liter Power Stroke V8

The newest member of Ford’s diesel V8 family, the 6.7 Liter Power Stroke “Scorpion”V8 replaced the 6.4 Liter V8 in 2010. Still in its early stages, little can be said regarding whether this engine can be as good or even better than its forerunners. But thus far it has proven to be quite impressive The engine is very impressive with an output of 400 horsepower and 800 foot pounds of torque.

UPDATE: Ford will be releasing a 3.2 liter powerstroke inline 5 diesel in the 2014 Transit
