2015 Ford Super Duty Powerstroke Update (F-250, F-350 and F-450)

Tuesday, August 12th 2014. | 2015 Ford Super Duty, News

For 2015 the Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty’s get a bit of a refresh. It is still available with its 6.2 liter V8 gasoline engine, with 385 horsepower 405 lb-ft of torque. Pretty impressive right? Not when compared to the diesel that for 2015 has been updated, for 2013 and 2014 it put out 400 horsepower and 800 pounds of torque. Which is already quite astonishing, but then Ram came out with an update to its Cummins engine bringing horsepower and torque up to 385/850. Now while this doesn’t beat Ford in horsepower, it does in torque and that is the number that matters, especially when it comes to these trucks. In fact, I would go as far as to say it is the number that matters most for a heavy duty pickup truck. For 2015 the 6.7 liter Powerstroke diesel in the Ford Super Duty will put out 440 horsepower and an astounding 860 lb-ft of torque!

This incredible amount of power is enough for Ford to reclaim the payload and towing title in the heavy duty segment. The 2015 Ford Super Duty now has a max tow rating of 31,200 pounds (F-450 Dually). This beats Ram 3500 by 1,200 pounds (at a max-tow capacity of 30,000 pounds). It should also be noted that this beats GM’s Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra by 8,000 pounds. An F-350, which has a less beefed up suspension and lacks the massive 19.5 inch commercial grade wheels the F-450 has, can still tow an impressive 26,500 pounds. The F-250 comes in at 16,800 pounds. To put it in perspective and to highlight why one might need a Super Duty truck, a 2014 F-150 properly equipped can tow up to 11,200 pounds.

Ford didn’t have to go too crazy to achieve this additional power, it was done with larger injectors and a slightly larger turbocharger. An added benefit of this larger turbo is improved air-braking (due to increased back pressure in the turbo). This can be activated via a button next to the steering column and then modulated via the accelerator. This is a unique-to-Ford feature in the segment. Ford also touts that this increase in power does not go coupled with a decrease in fuel mileage.
