We reported on the power increase for the F-Series before, the 2015 F-250, F-350 and F-450 all received a power increase as far as the Powerstroke diesel engine is concerned. It went from 400 hp and 800 ft-lb of torque to 440 hp and 860 ft-lb of torque. We stated that a larger turbo and large injectors were to thank for the power increase, but as it turns out Ford has another trick up its sleeve when it comes to this power plant. They’ve increased the size of the downpipe and they’ve also tweaked the shape a bit. As you can see in the picture below.

Downpipes are the pipe coming directly off the turbo and typically go down near the firewall, where they connect to the rest of the exhaust system. On many cars both gasoline (think EcoBoost) and diesel adding a larger downpipe is a popular way to gain a significant amount of horsepower. It is no surprise to me then that Ford states their redesigned downpipe was integral to the increased output of the 6.7 liter Powerstroke diesel engine. Turbo engines are known to put out more power when restrictions in the exhaust system are eliminated and the first piece of exhaust system a turbo is connected to is that downpipe. As you can see in the picture below, Ford’s new downpipe looks somewhat like the head of a Cobra.
