2015 Ford F-150 Spy Shots

Tuesday, June 11th 2013. | 2015 Ford F-150, News

The 2015 Ford F-150 has been caught out on the streets for testing. It is heavily camouflaged so we don’t get to see much yet. So far we do see some nice looking wheels, I doubt that flat black will be their color when they hit the showroom floor. It doesn’t look like the active grill shutters from the Atlas F-150 concept have made it onto this test vehicle, in addition I am not sure how likely it is that we’ll see them on any 2015 F-150’s, considering they haven’t been spotted on this test vehicle.

People are speculating that there is significant use of aluminum on this truck, this can be seen in the wheel well where the camouflage doesn’t quite cover the metal-work. The way the truckbed is fastened together implies that it may well be made of aluminum. Another area that wasn’t victim to camouflage, is the rear glass, it seems they’ve gone with a 2-piece design, rather than the usual 3-piece design. It may save some weight, but I doubt its significant.

At this point it is hard to tell just how many of the design cues were carried over from the Atlas concept, but we do spy what seems to be bold-looking grill that may well be inspired by the Atlas. Hopefully we’ll catch some more revealing shots in the near future. We also hope to learn more about engine and transmission tech, to be used in the F-150. Currently media outlets are thinking that the 3.5 EcoBoost V6, 5.0 Liter V8 and 3.7 Liter V6 will carry over. With newer engines to follow in the in 2015 for the 2016 model year. This wouldn’t be unprecedented as that was Ford’s strategy for the current generation of F-150 which started out in life with the tried and true 5.4 liter modular V8.

Although I am anxious to see the latest and greatest engines and transmissions from Ford. Perhaps they’ll at least mate up an 8 or 9-speed transmission to the 2015 model with newer engines to follow the next year. But even if the most significant change for the 2015 model is a significant weight savings, that should go hand-in-hand with a significant gain in efficiency. Which should keep the F-150 competitive in the MPG race.

Update: Upon closer inspection of the wheel-well picture above, it looks like it is definitely made out of aluminum, in the picture we see what looks like unpainted aluminum (from the way the light reflects on it). This being the case, we can look forward to a significant weight savings in the next F-150!
