2015 F-350 King Ranch vs Chevy and Ram

Out of the three players in the 1-ton/HD truck market, Ford’s 2015 F-350 came in third. I am talking about pickuptruck.com’s latest 1-ton HD Challenge. The 2015 F-350 with it’s 860 ft-lb 6.7 liter diesel was pitted against Ram’s 3500 HD and GM’s GMC Sierra 3500 HD. All three are formidable trucks and all of them performed extremely well in each of the gruelings tests. Just in time for this test Ford improved their engine with an additional 40 horsepower (440) and 60 ft-lb’s of torque (860). A much improved exhaust brake was also added, thanks to a larger turbo and a dedicated exhaust brake button in the cab, which when activated will let you control exhaust braking with the accelerator pedal.

Even with those upgrades the Ford still came in third. One reason I could argue is that it is the least recently updated of the 3 trucks (outside of this years minor refresh). It has an older somewhat less refined interior, even though it is an interior, that in my opinion, has stood the test of time very well. Another complaint was ride quality, the truck suffered from some jitters here and there that the others did not. But does this concern me a whole lot? No. These are a couple relatively minor complaints and that of the interior is of course a very subjective one to one’s tastes. At the end of the day when you look at this purely from a performance standpoint, or what pickuptrucks.com call’s their empirical score, these trucks scored so close to each other, that in my opinion, they are within a margin of error of each other. In other words, I think the results are too close to pronounce a convincing winner here. Out of almost 1,800 points, the GMC and the Ford had a 6 point spread. With the Ram, by the way, lagging behind significantly.

So in empirical testing the F-350 actually comes in second, or what I would call a shared first place. It is when the judge’s scoring get’s factored in that the F-350 falls to 3rd place. Which is largely due to the fact that it simply is an older truck. But I say go try out that revised 6.7 liter Powerstroke and you’ll surely be impressed, go drive the competition see if you agree with the judge’s ruling. Should you agree, but have a hard time buying a truck from the competition, hold off on your purchase for a year, because the 2016 Ford F-Series Super Duty is coming some time next year, I’m assuming in the 4th quarter of last year. Or perhaps you like the 2015 Super Duty, when we get closer to release of the 2016’s, it’ll be an excellent time to get a generous discount on a 2015 F-250, F-350 or F-450.
