2015 F-150 Payload Capacity vs Competition

Thursday, February 19th 2015. | 2015 Ford F-150, Ford F-150, Reviews

The 2015 Ford F-150 absolutely leaves its crosstown rivals the 2015 Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra and Ram 1500 in the dust when it comes to payload capacity (this is a rating for the maximum load a pickup truck can carry in its bed). Let’s start with the F-150, thanks too its weight shedding through use of aluminum for the body of the truck there was a significant bump from the 2014 model year. The 2015 Ford F-150 has max payload ratings, sorted by engine of:

2015 F-150 3.5 Liter Base V6: 1,910 pounds
2015 F-150 2.7 Liter EcoBoost V6: 2,250 pounds
2015 F-150 3.5 Liter EcoBoost V6: 3,270 pounds
2015 F-150 5.0 Liter Coyote V8: 3,300 pounds

The EcoBoost is king of towing with its best-in-class max tow rating of 12,200 pounds (for more tow ratings click here), the 5.0 liter V8 can claim the best-in-class payload rating of 3,300 pounds. For a more detailed payload chart head over to Ford’s website here. Now let’s take a look at where the 2015 Chevy Silverado (and GMC Sierra) and 2015 Ram 1500 come in:

2015 Ram 1500 3.6 Liter V6: 1,949 pounds
2015 Ram 1500 5.7 Liter HEMI V8: 1,781 pounds
2015 Ram 1500 3.0 Liter EcoDiesel V6: 1,614 pounds

2015 Silverado 1500 4.3 Liter V6: 1,980 pounds
2015 Silverado 1500 5.3 Liter V8: 2,260 pounds
2015 Silverado 1500 6.2 Liter V8: 2,130 pounds

When it comes to the Ram, for some reason their base V6 has the highest payload capacity, I imagine this has something to do with it being the lightest-weight engine option, but even at 1,949 pounds it barely beats the Ford F-150’s base offering and any other offering from Ford  is far ahead of the Ram 1500.

What about Chevy (and GMC)? First off, it was incredibly hard to find an easy to read chart for their payload capacities, I’m assuming they intentionally have you digging through their website because they know Ford has them beat by a wide margin. Except when it comes to the base V6, Chevy is ahead by 70 pounds, but with the 2.7 Liter EcoBoost only being a $495 option the Ford screams ahead of the competition, beating Chevy’s big 6.2 liter EcoTect3 V8 and coming up as-good-as even with the 5.3 liter V8.
