2013 F-150 beats out 2014 Silverado and Sierra

Wednesday, June 19th 2013. | 2013 Ford F-150, News, Reviews

Pickuptrucks did their annual light duty pickup truck comparison, comparing the 2013 F-150 to the all new 2014 Chevy Silverado, the all new 2014 GMC Sierra, the new 2013 Ram 1500 and an aging duo of Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan. So at first glance I couldn’t click fast enough to see where the F-150 had placed in comparison to the new offerings from GM, the Silverado and the Sierra, I happily found the F-150 with its EcoBoost 3.5 V6 had beat out the 5.3 liter EcoTec3 V8 duo convincingly. Then I realized that Ram also released a new 1500 some time ago for the 2013 model year, Ford also managed to come out on top in comparison to this one. Finally it was no surprise to me that the offerings from Nissan and Toyota came in last place, both in desperate need of a redesign.

So what were the parameters for this test? Pickuptrucks wanted a crew-cab type truck with four wheel drive under a $45,000 price-point from each of the manufacturers competing in this test. I imagine Ford opted for its mighty EcoBoost in a heartbeat, of course GM probably didn’t hesitate to enter its all new 5.3 liter EcoTec3 engine into this competition, with which they’ve been touting all kinds of class-leading numbers. But the Ford F-150 very convincingly beat out the GM duo in several of Putc’s performance tests, who are quoted going as far as calling the EcoBoost “quite simply, dominating”.

The F-150 did end up giving up some numbers in the “qualitative” part of the test, mostly Ford’s interior didn’t seem to be quite as refined, in Putc’s opinion. But we are talking about a design that originates in 2010 here, personally I am still a big fan of Ford’s interior design. I haven’t had the chance to sit in one of GM’s new offerings, but from the pictures I am not that excited about their interiors, but I can of course appreciate that they probably used the latest and greatest materials throughout the interior. Giving them an edge in this part of the competition.

Watch out for the 2015 F-150

In the end, what I take away from this is; Ford is set to release the 2015 F-150 next year. GM better watch out if a 2013 F-150 with a design originating in 2010 can beat out a 2014 Silverado and Sierra. As we predicted in an earlier article, the current generation F-150 is and was very well positioned to compete with GM’s latest offering. With likely improvements to the EcoBoost platform, significantly reduced weight through use of aluminum an all new interior and exterior and a laundry list of new features, things are looking very, very good for the 2015 F-150.
