1993 – 1995 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning

The first generation of the Special Vehicle Team (SVT) Ford F-150 Lightning was introduced in the 1993 model year, this model competed against Chevy’s 454SS. It was powered by a 5.8 Liter V8, otherwise known as the 351. It produced 240 horsepower and an, impressive for its time, 340 ft-lb’s of torque. In part thanks to the GT40 style cylinder heads SVT installed. It could do 0-60mph in 7.2 seconds and did the quarter mile in 15.6 seconds, top speed was limited to 110 miles per hour. It wasn’t the most efficient vehicle at 12 mpg city and 16mpg highway, but that shouldn’t be a concern when thinking about a vehicle like this. For the E4OD transmission to handle that additional power a transmission cooler was added.

Suspension-wise 1-inch anti-roll bars were added front and rear and the truck was lowered 2.5 inches from stock, with Monroe Formula GP gas shocks up front and a single leaf spring in the back. The brakes with discs up front and drums in the rear, bringing the truck from 60mph to zero in 143 feet. The exhaust was  a true-duals stainless steel exhaust system exiting behind the passenger wheel. The Lightning had dual fuel tanks holding a whopping grand total of 34.7 gallons, imagine filling that up at $4 a gallon! The truck could carry a payload of 745 pounds and tow a maximum of 5,000 pounds.

In 1993 the Lightning could be had in Raven Black and Bright Red, for 1994 and 1995 Ebony, Crimson and Oxford White were available on the Lighting. Options included electric side mirrors, trailer towing package, sliding rear windows and a security group with remote keyless entry/anti-theft system on 1994 and 1995 models only, cruise control, electric windows, tilt-wheel, auto-dim mirrors, double sun-visors and intermittent wipers. The most notable features of the Lightning interior were a perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel, multi-adjustable cloth bucket seats, a 6,000-rpm tachometer and a 120-mph speedometer.

Popular ways to increase performance were a high-flow exhaust system and headers for gain of roughly 15 hp and 20-25 ft-lb’s of torque and opening up the air intake system, which can be quite limiting. Models with a computer-controlled engine can benefit from a tuner.

The F-150 SVT Lightning and Chevy’s 454SS were extremely closely matched, both posting 0-60 times of 7.2 seconds, the F-150 covers the quarter mile in 15.6 seconds, the SS does it in 15.8 and they both had a braking distance from 60mph of 143 feet. This is quite remarkable considering the F-150 has a 351 cubic inch engine and the 454SS has well… a 454 cubic inch engine, with the 454SS only weighing about 100 pounds more.
